Sports Interactive has published another FM27 deep dive today, and this one is about what you see from the top-down view. It covers the 2D match engine, the In-Game Editor (IGE) and a batch of changes to messages, staff advice and the wider football world. Nothing revolutionary, but you will feel most of it in your day-to-day save.

If you missed any of the earlier ones, here they are:
- New interface and clearer navigation
- A deeper, more immersive football world
- Release date and a more spectacular matchday
- Tactical Tweaks and a more realistic match engine
- Revamped training and the new Tactical Effectiveness
- Manager Creator, newgens and accessibility
We read the official article, the images and the SI thread on Reddit. Here is what stood out.
The FM27 2D view is readable again
The matchday deep dive focused heavily on the 3D graphics, but SI reminded everyone that plenty of managers still prefer the top-down view. Based on feedback, the team has reworked the pitch.
The ball and player discs are smaller, and the ball has a stronger shadow so you can judge its height. Discs now show feet instead of arrows, and the goal nets are more transparent. It sounds minor, but in 2D that is exactly what decides whether you can follow a late winner in injury time.

The FM27 In-Game Editor takes the whole screen
The IGE has a new interface and is now full-screen throughout. Information is grouped more sensibly, the active tab is easier to spot and editable fields show context about what you are changing. If you edit a lot, expect fewer clicks. If you have never opened it, the learning curve should be gentler.

FM27 messages that are more than text
This is the part you will notice in the first few weeks. Monthly reports go deeper into club finances, loanee performance and how the board and fans rate you. At the end of the season, an awards message lists the best players in your league and at your club.
The NXGN 50 no longer makes you open another tab: the top 50 wonderkids appear in the body of the message. Scouting progress lists players and ratings in list or card view, and fitness tests are gathered into a single table.
The medical side has changed too. Working with the medical team at the PFA, SI has added a concussion protocol: a player needs clearance from a neurologist before returning to selection, and you can follow their recovery in the Medical Centre.

Prepare for matches without leaving the message
Linked to the training and Tactical Effectiveness deep dives, you can set the preparation type for each session right from the message. The weekly training schedule is editable there too, and the regular training breakdown is back, so you can see team performance and praise or criticise individual players.

Advice you can act on
Your staff speak more often. During a match, the dugout shows how the opposition manager is adjusting and when it makes sense to use, or stop using, a tactical tweak. Between games, suggestions from staff meetings arrive in one message, with the option to apply them all or only the ones you care about.
In transfers, advice runs from the scouting phase through to negotiations, and your Director of Football suggests fees and payment structures. The Player Database now shows Out of Possession roles among the key attributes, so you can see whether a signing fits your philosophy.
Small details you will notice
There are 19 competition backgrounds with licensed brands, which gives each competition more character. Player status flags can again stack up to three, and four new ones appear: language course, coaching badge, leadership training and availability for the reserves or youth team. Even without a club, you can view shortlists and the player database.
The seasonal and historic Best XIs are back, and the Captains screen supports drag and drop again. You can congratulate a player for several awards at once, and AI managers are a little more lenient when recalling a loanee.

Numbers and matches
The Data Hub will send more messages with key findings before games. Several stats get extra decimal places, including xA, dribbles, xG and shots on target, all per 90 minutes. Passes are split into short, medium and long, with totals and success rates.

On the pitch, players look at the referee when they are booked or protesting, and teammates react to red cards. Free-kicks get new gestures, clubs whose fans use drums in real life will hear them, and the linesmen’s flags move with new physics. After a match, playback has its own speed settings, and you can watch highlights as soon as you leave the stadium. The Daylight Offside rule, currently being trialled in the Canadian Premier League this season, is also in.
FM27 has 18 million database changes
The database has seen more than 18 million changes and 1,500 competition updates. There are two new licensed leagues, restructures in Northern Ireland and Wales, new competitions in Chile and Peru, and Swiss-style formats for the women’s league cups in England, France and Japan.
For anyone who cares about fixtures, the best news is the scheduling. Derbies between the big three in the Portuguese Premier League are now spread out more realistically through the season. There are also fixes in the Champions League, the Bundesliga and MLS, including avoiding back-to-back games against the same opponent.
What the community is saying
When we read SI’s thread on r/footballmanagergames, it had 93 upvotes, a 97% approval ratio and more than 80 comments. 2D players were the first to react, and several said the ball is finally readable again, something that made the top-down view close to unusable in FM26.
Not everyone is convinced. One user asked whether the smaller icons could hurt players who already struggle to see the screen. Others found it odd that pre-orders are still closed, and some felt this is more of the same. There were also questions about consoles, custom teams and the Romanian Cup format that went unanswered.
SI has already said the build shown is a development version, so the images may change. The reaction is cautious rather than hostile.
Our take
For 2D players, this is the most useful deep dive so far. The changes to the ball and discs look small on paper, but they are what you notice when a match is decided in the last minute.
The IGE and messages affect the day-to-day of a save, and that counts for a lot. Still, the community is right to want more on the match engine. SI has promised a livestream to show FM27 in action, and that is where we will see whether it all comes together.
