The GYR Beast 4231 FM27 tactic is, so far, the most downloaded tactic in FM27, with more than 27,000 downloads in a week. Its author, England’s GYR, has been making Football Manager tactics since FM16 and tested this one with three very different clubs. He won the quadruple with Arsenal, won the league and the Taça de Portugal with Sporting, and won promotion with Leicester.
The tactic at a glance
In possession, the team plays a 4-2-3-1. Out of possession, it switches to a 4-3-3, with a defensive midfielder and two pressing midfielders. In fact, GYR says the hardest part was finding the best out-of-possession shape. The style is Gegenpress and the mentality is Attacking.
- In possession (4-2-3-1): first, a ball-playing goalkeeper (BGK), two full-backs who push on as wing-backs (WB) and two ball-playing centre-backs (BCB). In midfield, there is a box-to-box playmaker (BBP) and a box-to-box midfielder (BBM).
- Attack: an inside forward on the left (IF), an attacking midfielder (AM), an inverted winger on the right (IW) and a poacher (P).
- Out of possession (4-3-3): the wing-backs drop to full-back (FB), a defensive midfielder (DM) sits behind two pressing midfielders (PCM), with two wingers (W) and a forward who presses the back line (TCF). In goal, the keeper becomes a sweeper keeper (SK).

The test results
GYR tested the tactic without the editor, switching between playing matches and using holiday. With Arsenal, he won the league with 81 points, 11 clear of Manchester City. Also, he won the Champions League, beating PSG 3-0 in the final, the FA Cup, the Carabao Cup and the Community Shield.

For us, the most interesting test is Sporting’s. In the Liga Portugal, the Lions won the title with 22 wins, 6 draws and 6 defeats, ahead of FC Porto and Benfica. Finally, they also won the Taça de Portugal, beating Arouca 2-0 in the final.

Finally, Leicester won League One, with 27 wins in 46 matches. In other words, the tactic also worked at a club that does not start as the favourite.

GYR’s tips
- Train the roles: have each player train the role he plays, so the team gets familiar with the tactic faster.
- Watch fitness: if players reach matches tired, lower the training intensity.
- Fewer cards: during matches, remove Get stuck in if the team picks up too many yellows. According to the author, the player instructions help but are not essential.
- Set pieces and morale: your own choices affect results. For example, custom set pieces or a dressing room with low morale can undo the tactic.

Mind the Tactical Effectiveness
In FM27, a tactic is no longer enough on its own. Tactical Effectiveness measures whether the squad understands the idea, has the right players for each role and believes in the manager. So this tactic may not work straight away for every team. In fact, in the comments some players got great results with Blackburn and IFK Norrköping, while another was 19th with Swansea after 13 games.
So give the team time to build familiarity, play people in their natural positions and do not change everything after the first defeat. At a small club, results also take longer to come. Finally, for other ideas, see AsderBey’s 4-2-3-1 tactic or Knap’s tactics pack.
