Realism Match Engine – a match engine tuned on real matches, by HILDEGARNES

5 min read

Realism Match Engine is an FM27 mod that changes the match engine data, the simatch.fmf file. Made by HILDEGARNES (Medhi Garic), it splits players into 11 ability bands instead of the game’s 3. It also tunes match statistics against 5,340 real matches from 15 divisions. It is free and replaces a single file, so it is just as easy to undo.

The author’s goal is easy to explain. With the original engine, he felt every match played out the same: a world-class striker and a promising kid produced the same game. So he spent months taking the file apart to find out why.

What changes in the match engine

FM27 keeps a table of what a player in each position and at each level usually produces in a match. The engine then draws players’ actions from that table. The problem, according to the author, is that the original file only has three bands. In other words, a youngster with 110 Current Ability and a veteran with 150 draw from the same table.

  • 11 bands instead of 3: for example, players of 110, 150 and 190 now have different statistical profiles. So a limited centre-back should look limited, not just unlucky.
  • Recalibrated values: more than 16,000 entries were adjusted with the real-match data. In total, the table grows from 3,420 to 43,615 entries.
  • More intensity: in the author’s tests there are more fouls, sprints, distance covered and interceptions, but fewer blocked shots.
  • Two tactical styles with an identity: Tiki-Taka and Tiki-Taka Vertical were, in practice, copies of other styles. They now defend differently, so the game goes from 7 to 10 defensive profiles.

The finer grid of bands was adapted from Skogr’s engine, another FM27 match engine mod, and the author credits him for it. However, the calibration against real matches and the tactical styles are his own work.

The numbers and what it does not fix

The author tracked eleven matches watched in full and admits the sample is small. For example, shots land between 22 and 26 per match, close to the 23 to 28 of real football. Goals range from 1 to 4 per match. However, shots on target are still above real levels and fouls well below: 11 to 18, against 21 to 30.

The list of limits is honest. Fouls stay low, because the table describes them but does not cause them. Also, corners are still a little high, mostly because of crosses, which the author says he is tuning down. Tackling is not even in the tactical style data, so it cannot be edited.

One player simulated a full season in seven leagues with version 1.0, with 1,446 matches in the leagues that had expected goals data. Goals ended up within 3% of expected goals (xG) and the champions had the best underlying numbers. But the Bundesliga and Ligue 1 were low-scoring, and he rated it 14 out of 20. The author explains that the table does not know which competition you are in, so it pulls every league towards the average.

Who it is for

It is for anyone who watches full matches and feels the gap between good and bad players does not show on the pitch. That is why the author suggests testing it in lower divisions, where squad quality varies more, and giving it five or six matches before drawing conclusions. It changes the matches you watch. As for instant result, the author says he has not tested it yet.

If the original engine works for you, there is no reason to switch. Even so, since you only need to restore one file, it is easy to try it on a separate save and compare.

The version available here is 1.2, from 5 November, for FM27 version 27.0.0. It fixes the tactical style names that went missing in 1.0 and 1.1. It also drops the momentum change, which broke the graph partway through matches, so that table is back to the game’s original. Everything else stays: the 11 bands, the calibration and the two tactical styles.

Download – Realism Match Engine v1.2

How to install:
  1. First, open the game folder. In Steam, right-click Football Manager 27 and choose «Manage» and «Browse local files».
  2. Then go into shared\data and back up the original simatch.fmf, for example to your desktop. Do not skip this step.
  3. Next, extract the zip and put the mod’s simatch.fmf in place of the original.
  4. Finally, start the game. Your existing saves keep working.

Things to watch

This is a fan mod, not endorsed by Sports Interactive or SEGA, and it needs a legit copy of FM27. It uses no DLL and no editor, in other words it is just a data file. To uninstall, put your copy of simatch.fmf back. Alternatively, use «Verify integrity of game files» in Steam, which restores the original file. Also, an FM update may overwrite the mod’s file.

You can only use one match engine mod at a time, so Skogr’s and this one do not work together. Skins, databases, logos and tactics are fine. In an online save, every player, host included, needs the same file. Otherwise, each one plays with a different engine in the same league.

The author later confirmed that 1.2 still left 11 tactical style files pointing to the wrong place, which may hide the names again. He fixed that in 1.2.1, from 6 November, which changes nothing else. He has also said he used an AI assistant to analyse the file and write the texts, but that the testing was done by him. As for donations, the author accepts them, but nothing is locked and the mod stays free.

The files are hosted by their original authors. FMPortugal only points to the official download page — all credit goes to their creators.
