It’s coming home… Hugo Pinheiro is coming home.

Championship Manager 01/02 gave rise to several legends. In Portugal, two names were on everyone’s lips: Hugo Pinheiro and Tó Madeira.
Tó Madeira is well known as one of the biggest “glitches” in the game’s database: the creation of a former member of the research team, who ended up becoming a publicity machine and helped grow CM’s already huge legion of Portuguese fans even further.
The other, Hugo Pinheiro, was a 20-year-old goalkeeper playing for modest Marinhense.
In 2018, aged 37, he returned to “his” Marinhense, where he was reunited with another legend from that edition, Pedro Emanuel.
How the legend was born
According to an interview with Número 10, reproduced by the website Futebol Distrital de Leiria, not even he knew whether it had been a mistake or a researcher imagining a brighter future for him.
The researcher in question, Mário Rui Nicolau, a journalist from Marinha Grande who worked with the Portuguese research team for only two years, explained that the sky-high potential was the result of unclear instructions:
“There were two new fields with negative numbers. One of them corresponded to the development margin. For Hugo Pinheiro I put -1, thinking I was not giving him much potential, but it turned out to be the highest rating on the scale.”
As for Pedro Emanuel, he insisted it was no mistake: he really thought he had a bright future.
Fame that did not pay the bills
Despite his virtual fame, Hugo Pinheiro says it never helped his career. He was never contacted by a big club. But it did make for some funny stories:
“I would play away and people would come up to me because of the game. Opponents and fans. When I had new teammates, on the first day of training they would immediately ask if I was the Hugo Pinheiro from CM. It was a good icebreaker and helped me settle in.”

In the first phase of his career, besides four seasons at Marinhense, he played for Portomosense, Rio Maior and Fátima, where he was coached by Rui Vitória and won promotion to the Liga de Honra. At 30, he decided to hang up his gloves.
Football did not guarantee stability and, with the birth of a son, life called for other priorities. But he did not walk away completely: he stayed involved in football as a youth coach.
A comeback for a good cause
After six seasons out, between 2011 and 2017, he returned to the pitch with Os Vidreiros, newly promoted to the Leiria FA’s top division. And the reason was a noble one:
«Quis fazer uma homenagem ao meu avô. Já não consegui fazê-la com ele vivo, por isso tive de a fazer depois de ele falecer. Ele era adepto d’Os Vidreiros e foi por isso que voltei. Como o meu filho já está mais crescido, tenho mais disponibilidade para jogar», contou ao Bancada.
His fitness is not what it used to be and the team finished last and went down. But his connection to football continued for at least one more season, and at the very club where he became a virtual legend, Atlético Clube Marinhense.
