From Football Manager to the dugout: Shaun Guest and Strule United

2 min read

Many of us have played Football Manager since we were kids. It is one of those things that never fails, year after year, and that grew up with us. With age come responsibilities, free time shrinks and most people end up drifting away from the game. But some take the passion into real life.

From Lancashire to Northern Ireland

That was the case of Shaun Guest. Originally from Lancashire, he is 32, has a sports degree and lives in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, where he is head coach of modest Strule United.

He is still taking his first steps, at a level far from where he wants to be. But it was his passion for management games that opened the door to his other passion: coaching for real.

“I have been fanatical about CM and FM since I was little. I combined the many hours at the computer with just as many watching Blackburn Rovers live. My dad bought me a season ticket,” he told the Lancashire Telegraph.

Tactics always come first

Just like Vodu, our Portuguese special one of Football Manager, Shaun has always had a soft spot for the tactical side.

“The tactical side was always what captivated me most in each edition, but of course I also liked the transfers.”

The plan is to get his UEFA C license the following year and keep adding qualifications, always reading and learning, until he reaches a professional club.

So do not be like your parents: let the kids play. Who knows, it might be the start of a career. He would not be the first, nor the last.

Have you ever thought about taking a coaching course?
