And they're right\u2026 The iconic management simulator was born in 1992 under the name Championship Manager, and after some complicated issues, from 2005 it took on its current name. And it's never stopped rising!<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 id=\"incontent\"><\/h4>\n<h4><strong><em>Carlos Bessa and Bruno Gens Lu\u00eds are researchers for Sports Interactive, which means they set the squads for Portuguese teams, from the top of the Liga NOS all the way down to the district leagues, as well as setting the stars' ratings. But there's more\u2026 They're lively, approachable, and unlike what you often see elsewhere in the gaming world, they genuinely love what they do. And they don't hide anything\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4093\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4093\" style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fmportugal.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/carlos-bruno.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4093 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fmportugal.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/carlos-bruno.jpg\" alt=\"Bruno Gens Luis e Carlos Bessa\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4093\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carlos and Bruno<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4><strong>Well, first of all, thank you both for agreeing to this interview. Let me start by asking what your current roles and responsibilities are within the FM structure.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Our role is Head Researchers, meaning we're in charge of research for Portugal. Our job is to coordinate a whole team of assistants\/scouts that we recruit, as well as making sure every playable team is as complete as possible at every level. Besides all that coordination, we also do the research work itself across every playable league (1st, 2nd and Campeonato de Portugal): detailing profiles (setting player attributes), creating players\/staff\/referees, adding biographical and statistical data, among many other tasks that, even though they're not visible to the 'manager', are also entered by the team.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>For all those kids, and some adults too, who dream of one day being in your shoes, how can they help you with the database or with the game's development itself? Besides knowing a lot about football, how does someone reach your level?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Our doors are always open to applications to possibly join our research team: anyone interested, as long as they have a reasonable level of English, just needs to go to our website and fill in the form there for the role they want to apply for (depending on the vacancies we list as available):\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fmportugal.net\/en\/candidatura\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">application form<\/a>. I remember spending whole Saturdays watching Premier League matches and rounding the day off watching one or two games from our own league. All that enjoyment, combined with the 'power' of being able to 'command' the players we watched on TV in Football Manager (Championship Manager until 2004), and also discovering new stars like the ones we saw on TV, made this 'bug' grow more and more, to the point that at school, 'normal' conversation topics with friends became\u2026 discussions about the tactics we used; the achievements we'd pulled off (!); the new stars we'd found on a 2nd division team in Brazil! Good old times\u2026 (laughs)<\/p>\n<p>Bruno Lu\u00eds: Since I'm older than Carlos, it's only natural my passion started earlier. I first played, even before I had my own computer, at friends' houses, and I never stopped from then on, right up until I was recruited for Portuguese research. I started with CM2 94\/95, which only had the English league, and I'd manage every star I saw in the weekend highlights on RTP2. I'd print out stats and squad lists and bring them to school to show all my friends, even though most of them couldn't care less. (laughs) New editions kept coming out, and I made my own updates which I shared with everyone I knew who played FM. Because of that, I found a lot of errors, which for several years I reported directly on the SI forum, without ever thinking I could actually join the research team. In 2014 everything changed: I was contacted and joined the team, where Carlos had already been for several years.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embedVideo embedLeft\">\n<div id=\"videoElement\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_4079\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4079\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fmportugal.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Researchers-de-todo-mundo-com-o-Miles.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4079 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fmportugal.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Researchers-de-todo-mundo-com-o-Miles.jpg\" alt=\"Football Manager Portugal Entrevista Chefes\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4079\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Head Researchers in a meeting with Miles Jacobson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"videoElement_description\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4><strong>From what I understand, just liking football isn't enough. You need to understand tactics, dynamics, a thousand and one things that not everyone can master. Do you have any background in sports? A coaching badge or something like that?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We both trained in analysis and scouting, but after we'd already joined the team. Not out of necessity, but because we wanted to improve and expand our skills. In our view, you need something more than just that \u2014 you need real passion for scouting\/player analysis and, above all, the sensitivity to tell apart current form, work rate and talent. Anyone who's really into this side of things and has at least a basic user-level grasp of computers ends up feeling right at home on our team.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>And what's the day-to-day like for someone in your role?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Coordinating the research isn't a 'job', it's more of a hobby for our spare time after work and on weekends. There are two main working phases, which are broken down into smaller ones. The main one runs from April to September. During that phase, we not only set monthly targets for the team to meet, but also recruit and train new candidates to join the research effort. The second phase runs from December to early February, and covers the winter transfer window update. Besides those two phases, our weekends, and not just weekends, are taken up with match-watching, mainly live but also via video footage. Because of that, you can't really say there's a daily routine, beyond constantly improving the quality of our database across its many aspects.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"O_impacto_e_a_evolucao_do_Football_Manager\"><\/span>The impact and evolution of Football Manager<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>How did FM go from being a simple computer game to a database used by 'real' clubs and the true phenomenon it is today?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Football Manager can genuinely be used as a complementary tool for a scouting department. Every player evaluation entered into the database is meticulously and individually put together, and set within its proper competitive context, so if a player shows certain traits a hypothetical club is looking for, or future potential, that will be reflected in the database completely impartially. We know there are other cases similar to Roberto Firmino, who was discovered in the game, but they're not made public because it could, in a way, take credit away from the scout who found him through our platform. It's all a matter of logic. It's well known that the work of scouts is still undervalued by club boards, so, to strengthen their standing within the team, scouts would never admit that their 'discovery' actually came from a computer game. It's not unusual for people to come to us asking for opinions on certain players, but it all stays 'between friends'. The media coverage of these success stories only adds even more credibility to the database, which is so painstakingly built by the largest scouting network in the world.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Do you agree with that somewhat controversial saying that 'FIFA and PES are for kids and FM is for men'?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>It's not fair at all to compare games like FIFA and PES with Football Manager. Even though both are tied to a passion that unites us all, they're completely different. I mean, in the past you surely had to go watch Campeonato de Portugal matches at the stadium, but now a lot more games are shown on TV.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>It's still mainly 'in person', because it lets us better observe every factor that can affect a player's performance, and we can also assess their off-the-ball movement and work rate. With video footage, unless it's a wide-angle shot, which isn't the norm and when it happens is usually very poor quality, the focus is mainly on the player with the ball, which doesn't let us assess players fully in terms of their overall attributes.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>If they want to get into this line of work, which isn't always easy, I know that from time to time, keeping such a close eye on so many players lets you spot some 'shady business'. I don't want names or addresses, but there are some players out there with 'fudged' ages, right?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We'll leave that one to SEF (Portugal's immigration service) and the Portuguese Football Federation, but it's clear that dozens of players enter every year with fake passports and compete in youth competitions, gaining an advantage over the rest. In the cases we spot, we tend to lower their potential in FM.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>With all the experience you gain in this field, other doors open up in the real world, like what happened with Jos\u00e9 Chieira. Have you ever had the chance to work for clubs, and do you think about that for the future?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Speaking specifically about the biggest clubs in Portugal, we haven't yet had a direct approach for a collaboration with any particular professional club, which we take in stride, since besides being organised and structured scouting departments, they're also fairly closed circles that are even harder to get into. What happens more often is approaches from semi-professional clubs, and messages from other scouts (who work with professional clubs), as well as agents\/agencies or lower-division clubs looking for information\/players. That said, we've had (and still have!) research assistants\/scouts who ended up linked to semi-professional and professional teams, with their work on Football Manager playing a part in their being brought into those teams. We won't hide that it's a goal of ours to one day get the chance to work in a professional team's scouting department, much like Jos\u00e9 Chieira does at Sporting, so all we can do is keep working as hard as we have so that the opportunity comes along.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>How many times have you thought, on seeing news of a new signing: 'But that guy's rubbish, how can they be signing him?'<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>That's the dish of the day. In Portuguese football, unfortunately, commission still matters more than the players' actual quality. Most club officials tend to sign whichever players agents push on them, even if they're not good enough. As for new features, the biggest one is probably the addition of the development centre, a department dedicated exclusively to developing our youth players and continuously tracking them, even while out on loan at other clubs.<\/p>\n<p>Clubs also now have three categories of ambitions. The cultural one, which comes from the team's existing identity, and which you'll need to respect to hit the annual targets. One example is Barcelona's possession-based football, which comes from their famous academy, La Masia. Don't think you can go there and play a low block and counter-attack, because that won't go down well with the board or the fans.<\/p>\n<p>The other categories are set by the board. That is, when we sign a player, his status will be set out for each season of the contract. This way we'll avoid situations where young prospects, or even backup goalkeepers, start asking for more playing time.<\/p>\n<p>In Portugal, there's an interesting new feature for anyone who likes doing long-term saves away from the 'big' teams. Like so many other fans, we played CM\/FM since we were kids, so it was part of our whole childhood. Getting the chance, years later, to contribute to the database of a video game like this feels like there's a piece of us in there. When you mix two passions \u2014 football and Football Manager \u2014 the result can only be good!<\/p>\n<h4><strong>A lot of people still talk about the T\u00f3 Madeira legend today. You surely have dozens of funny stories like that, whether about 'poorly rated' players or stars who aren't actually that good in real life. Tell us some of those stories\u2026<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Apart from club bias, which blinds a lot of people, there aren't really any big stories. People usually just complain that player X from team 1 is better than player Y from team 2. As for poorly rated players, maybe the funniest story happened last year with Chiquinho, now at SL Benfica but who was shining at Moreirense at the time, having just scored against his future club. We put up a post with an image of his attributes on the Research Team's Facebook page saying 'If you didn't know him, now you do. One of the biggest talents in the top flight, with huge potential to develop in Football Manager\u2026 and in reality. Don't be afraid to invest in him, he can't disappoint.' Straight away one club's fan attacked us, questioning our quality as scouts, saying the player in question had been swapped for a better one (Alfa Semedo), something we didn't agree with. He's probably changed his mind by now. Biggest miss? Along the lines of 'you could have given my player a bit more strength\u2026'?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Yes, it's happened, but always jokingly. Diogo Jota, back when he was still at Pa\u00e7os de Ferreira, used to come talk to us and mention that certain attributes should be higher. The vast majority don't share information (from the simplest to the most complex, like the names of medical staff) the way we'd like or expect, so our 'lifeline' always ends up being getting information through the various other channels available. Another one is the sheer amount of information to update and the lack of time for it. Summer holidays? We haven't known what those are since we took on this role. All our free time in summer goes into sitting in front of the computer, updating the database.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>And the biggest joys?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We finally have the database we always wanted back when we were just regular FM players. On top of that, there's the feeling of seeing each new edition's 'box' on the shelves! Is he any good in the game?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A player is worth whatever price the buying club is willing to pay. When it comes to a surgical signing, there's no price ceiling. A few years ago, a lot of people laughed at the fee for Virgil van Dijk, since it was extremely high compared to the going rates at the time. But Liverpool found their target and paid what they felt they needed to get him. Today he's arguably the best centre-back in the world, and it turned out to be a bargain. Jo\u00e3o F\u00e9lix is a special player with extremely high potential. He'll certainly prove all his quality to the critics.
