He's been contributing to the game's Portuguese research team for seven years, and since 2015 he's led the scouting team, which now has over 50 people.<\/p>\n<p>\"After many years as a player, I started contributing alongside Jos\u00e9 Chieira, in 2010,\" says Carlos. Jos\u00e9 Chieira is a professional scout. He regularly works with F.C. Porto and has also worked with Sporting CP and Greece's Panathinaikos. \"In 2015 he stopped working for Football Manager (FM) and invited me to take over as leader,\" the young man explains.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Carlos's life has been split between his job as an administrative worker and FM. With the TV tuned to the sports channels and a laptop on his knees, he explains that his duties as leader take up around 30 hours a week. \"I never used to wear glasses, and now, from spending so many hours watching TV and sitting in front of the computer, I have to,\" he says.<\/p>\n<p>The notebooks he always keeps by his side, filled with underlined notes, tactics and the names of players unknown to most people, reflect the sheer number of matches he watches.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container\" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"Carlos Bessa - Olheiros Digitais JN\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Mx0HCgmEaZc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Live or on TV, he watches almost ten matches every weekend, and that number can double during the busiest periods.<\/p>\n<p>\"Watching as many matches as possible is the best training you can get,\" he says, explaining that pre-season, before FM's release, is when he has the most work. In Portugal there are around 50 people, though it's been close to 100 in the past, who are part of Sports Interactive's research team, the company behind FM's development.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h4><strong>A digital scout's tasks<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Carlos and Pedro assign players their ratings by scoring different attributes. They're scouts for FM, and their work has no connection to real clubs whatsoever. Technical, tactical and psychological abilities are assessed and entered purely into the game's editor.<\/p>\n<p>Even though this data is just for the game, the similarities with reality are striking. It emerged a few weeks ago that Hoffenheim signed Brazilian player Roberto Firmino after spotting him in the game. Lutz Pfannenstiel, from the German club's scouting department, told the story in an interview with TalkSport radio. Firmino was later sold to Liverpool and is now one of the Premier League's standout players.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Besides paying particular attention to teams in the lower divisions, Carlos Bessa also has to coordinate, with help from another lead, everything done by the scouts. \"In Portugal alone there are over 17,000 player and staff profiles, and we have to make sure more cases like T\u00f3 Madeira don't happen again,\" the head researcher explains.<\/p>\n<p>T\u00f3 Madeira was a real phenomenon within the FM community. The person responsible for tracking Gouveia's matches created a fake player, with attributes that would put the best players in the world to shame. It was 2002, and several clubs contacted the team from the Guarda district. The home team is facing Sousense, in the Campeonato de Portugal Prio (CPP), and most of the players on the pitch have never appeared on TV. But they're anything but unknown to Pedro Costa, who travelled from Oliveira de Azem\u00e9is to watch Kiko and Tiago Gomes play. \"I have to watch the matches and take notes on the players, their technical, psychological and tactical attributes, and then transfer that into the game's editor,\" the physical education teacher explains to JN.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container\" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"Pedro Costa - Olheiros Digitais JN\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RsgWvkLPbTA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>He's one of the first to arrive at the stadium, so he can sit in the main stand, where he can see the tactical movements and even the players' warm-up: \"I like getting to matches early, and I jot down team information in my notebook.\"<\/p>\n<p>Smartphone in hand, to \"check the stats of lesser-known players,\" he recalls how he joined FM's scouting team. \"I'm part of a forum, and I noticed they were looking for a contributor. Since I'd always loved playing FM and knew the lower-division teams were out of date, I decided to apply,\" he says.<\/p>\n<p>The adventure began two years ago, and every weekend he goes to the stadium to watch a match from CPP's S\u00e9rie C. \"I watch two or three live every week, plus the ones shown on TV. Even my girlfriend comes to matches with me,\" jokes the young man, who tells us his friends \"are always asking which players are the best ones to sign\" in FM. \"They know I know about the players nobody else does, and that they're cheap. Sometimes I do end up giving them a few names,\" he adds.<\/p>\n<p>The match is already halfway through the first half, and the little black notebook in Pedro's hand reflects the changes managers make to their players' positioning on the pitch. \"During matches I have to make a lot of changes. These teams are smaller and there's little information about them,\" he comments.<\/p>\n<p>Although he mainly focuses on the lower tiers of Portuguese football, \"which get less media attention than the Liga NOS,\" the FM scout admits it's \"very rewarding to see players discovered in the lower divisions go on to succeed at top-flight clubs.\"<\/p>\n<p>And Portugal has no shortage of success stories, among the 1,150 teams featured in the game. \"Jo\u00e3o Amaral was at Pedras Rubras last year, and this year he's a starter at Vit\u00f3ria de Set\u00fabal. Despite the many hours spent chatting in the Facebook group they set up, this was the first time Carlos and Pedro had actually met in person, at the CPP's matchday 12 fixture. We don't get paid a single cent by SI, but it's like a second job,\" says Carlos Bessa. \"My main motivation is my love of football and my desire to make it in this world,\" adds Pedro, who also coaches the youth teams at UD Oliveirense.<\/p>\n<p>Both scouts see the experience gained through the game as an opportunity to break into professional football in the future. \"My goal is to take this digital work to a more serious level. This is my great passion and my biggest dream,\" reveals Carlos Bessa, a goal shared by Pedro: \"If in ten years I were working with a professional coaching staff, or as a scout, I'd be very happy.\"<\/p>\n<p>Along the way, several players have surprised Carlos and Pedro. \"Bernard, from Vit\u00f3ria de Guimar\u00e3es, was one of the biggest disappointments. He had a good rating in the game, but he didn't prove it in real life,\" Carlos comments. A professional does exactly the same thing, but for a club,\" Pedro says.<\/p>\n<p>At stadiums, they follow the same routines and sit right next to club scouts, and even some directors and managers. That makes contact with the real world easier. Carlos Bessa says he's never been contacted by any club looking to improve a player's ratings in FM, but confirms he's been approached by an agent. \"I was watching a Pa\u00e7os de Ferreira pre-season match, and someone came to talk to me to let me know there was a player on the rise,\" he says. \"The player in question has a good rating in the game, but that's because he really is good. It's not because of the agent,\" argues the person in charge of scouting in Portugal. \"Given the work I do and how I do it, I consider myself a digital scout,\" Pedro states firmly.<\/p>\n<p>The President of the National Association of Football Agents (ANAF), Artur Fernandes, looks at the FM phenomenon with caution, drawing a clear line between professional scouting work and what's done for fun. \"Club scouting is based on more qualified criteria, following parameters set by the technical and management staff,\" he comments.
