This is perhaps the story every FM addict tells their friends when accused of wasting time.
A CV built in FM
On November 21, 2012, FC Baku, from Azerbaijan, confirmed Vugar Huseynzade as the new reserve team manager. He was 21, freshly graduated and had never coached a real team. His main experience was something else: ten years playing Football Manager.
Vugar did not just parachute in. He had been working at the club since February that year, as an adviser. But the press at the time could not resist the detail: a kid who learned football on FM had beaten former professional players to the job. The news even mentioned Jean-Pierre Papin among the other candidates.
Why this still fascinates us
Because it is the dream come true. Anyone who has played FM for years knows a lot about the transfer market, young players and managing a dressing room (on screen, at least). The question was always whether that was any use out here. In Vugar’s case, it opened a door.
Of course, it is not enough. Real coaching comes with pressure, people and surprises no game can imitate. But Vugar’s story gave hope to a whole generation that spent their nights reading scout reports.
