Some people swear FM is realistic. Niall Connolly decided to put that to the test with money.
The game before the game
Niall, a 30-year-old Cork City fan, played Cork City vs Athlone Town in Football Manager before going to watch the real game. On the computer, Cork won 3-1, with two goals from Gavin Kilkenny and one from Deshane Dalling.
And he thought: why not? He bet 5 euros on a 3-1 Cork win, at odds of 12/1.
The real game
In September 2021, Cork City beat Athlone Town 3-1. The scorers were not the same (Barry Coffey, Cian Murphy and Dylan McGlade scored, with Kurtis Byrne pulling one back for Athlone), but the score matched.
Niall said afterwards that he just wanted to test how realistic Football Manager is. The answer, according to him: very.
A friendly warning
Before anyone rushes off to simulate the whole matchday: this is not betting advice. For every spot-on 3-1 there are a thousand games where FM promises us a stroll and our striker misses everything. If you bet, do it responsibly. Preferably only in your save.
