There are two ways to sign stars without paying what their club asks: wait for the contract to expire or pay the release clause. FM27 has good opportunities on both fronts. According to the FM Blog database, 4880 players see their contracts end on 30 June 2027, and 171 players aged 30 or under have a release clause of up to €115m.
We gathered the most interesting expiring contracts in FM27, the release clauses in the Liga Portugal and what they mean if you manage one of the big three. Also, we converted the values from pounds to euros, at an approximate rate of £1 = €1.15.
First things first: the ABI and POT ratings
FM Blog gives each player two ratings: ABI (current ability) and POT (potential). Both go from 1 to 99. In other words, they are the site’s own scale, not the game’s Current Ability or Potential Ability. Even so, they help you see who is worth it.
The big names with expiring contracts
The names at the top would scare any director of football, but they can also change a season. Harry Kane, at Bayern, has 94 ABI and earns €436k a week. Also, Thibaut Courtois (90) and Virgil van Dijk (88) both see their contracts end in June.
| Player | Club | Age | Pos. | ABI/POT | Wage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Harry Kane | Bayern | 32 | ST | 94/94 | €436k |
| Thibaut Courtois | Real Madrid | 34 | GK | 90/90 | €292k |
| Bruno Fernandes | Man Utd | 31 | AMC | 89/89 | €345k |
| Virgil van Dijk | Liverpool | 35 | CB | 88/92 | €402k |
| Alisson | Liverpool | 33 | GK | 86/91 | €293k |
| Kevin De Bruyne | Napoli | 35 | AMC | 82/94 | €212k |

The best players on expiring contracts in FM27. Data: FM Blog
- Kevin De Bruyne (35, Napoli): has 82 ABI and earns €212k a week, far less than the other stars on the list.
- Alisson (33, Liverpool): with 86, he is the alternative to Courtois in goal.
- Luka Modrić (40, Milan): still has 80. However, at 40, it is a one-season deal.
- Christian Pulisic (27, Milan) and Kaoru Mitoma (29, Brighton): both have 80. So they are among the most interesting, because they still have several years ahead of them.
- Lisandro Martínez (28, Manchester United): has 77 and is one of the youngest centre backs on the list.
The Portuguese players with expiring contracts
First, Bruno Fernandes. The Manchester United captain has 89 ABI, is 31 and earns €345k a week. So he is the strongest Portuguese player on the list. Then there is Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, with 74 ABI, whose contract at Al Nassr is running out. But get your wallet ready: he earns €3.9m a week.
- João Félix (26, Al Nassr): has 76 ABI and 83 POT. Still, he earns €664k a week, a wage that is hard to match.
- Danilo Pereira (34, Al Ittihad): has 74. So he can still play at centre back.
- Mateus Mané (18, Wolves): the youngest of the group, with 71 ABI and a wage of €9k a week. So he may be the best opportunity on the list.
- André Silva (30, FC Porto): has 70 and earns €39k a week.
- Nélson Semedo and Thierry Correia: two right backs, with 69 and 68, at Fenerbahçe and Venezia.
Careful with the contract end date
FM Blog gives an important warning. In other words, the contract end date does not mean you can already negotiate with the player. Also, the club may renew his deal before you get there. So keep track of these names with your scouts and prepare your offer early.
The best release clauses
FM Blog’s second list gathers players aged 30 or under with a release clause of up to €115m. For example, Athletic’s Nico Williams has 82 ABI and a €93.8m clause. Meanwhile, Real Sociedad’s Mikel Oyarzabal can leave for €74.1m.
Plus, there are several centre backs. Dayot Upamecano (85) has a €64.2m clause, but you can only trigger it in July. Bremer, at Juventus, can leave for €59.2m. Finally, Ronald Araujo, at Liverpool, has 77 ABI, 88 POT and a €79m clause.

- FC Porto: Kiwior (€69.1m), Gabri Veiga (€64.2m) and Pablo Rosario (€49.4m) are also on it.

What this means if you manage one of the big three
So if you manage Porto, Benfica or Sporting, these clauses are a risk. English clubs have the money to pay them, and the game won’t let you block the move. So check your contracts at the very start of the save. Then try to renew your key players and raise or remove the clause, even if it costs more in wages.
On the other hand, there are cheap clauses for those who manage outside the big three. For example, Portuguese players Gui (Almería, €7.7m), André Horta (Al-Ula, €10.6m) and goalkeeper Guilherme Fernandes (Córdoba, €6.1m) are within reach of several Liga Portugal clubs.
Our take
The name that excites us most is Mateus Mané: he is 18, earns little and his contract ends in June. However, we would also love to see Bruno Fernandes back in Portugal, if the wage budget allows it. And if you manage one of the big three, look at your own clauses before thinking about anyone else’s.
