Add up the hours you have spent on Football Manager. Scary, isn’t it? Now imagine having more than 13,700.
That is the case of Orri Thorisson, a 27-year-old Icelander. By his own count, FM has taken up about 8% of his waking life. That is 571 days as a virtual manager. His Leicester City save alone took more than 600 hours, with six consecutive Premier League titles and 833 games, of which he lost only 84.
From the computer chair to the dugout
In February 2024, Knattspyrnufélag Vesturbæjar (KV), a Reykjavík club, announced Orri as its new head coach. KV was in the Icelandic 4th tier after two consecutive relegations, and the chairman, Auðunn Örn Gylfason, explained that this time they wanted to take a different path in choosing a coach. Different it was.
Mind you, Orri did not get there on FM alone. He had previously coached Kría, in the 5th tier, where he won 13 of 16 games and earned promotion.
Did FM help? He says yes
He makes no secret of the game’s influence. He said he genuinely believes FM had a positive impact on his real-life coaching skills.
